Platform choices

WordPress, Shopify or a custom website: which fits your business?

A practical way to choose a website platform around editing, online selling, integrations and long-term support, with examples from TechRovo’s work.

Choose around your team’s everyday work

The right platform starts with the people who will use it. Will you update opening hours once a month, publish articles every week, process orders every day or manage a more specialised workflow? Make a list of those tasks before choosing the technology.

A familiar platform can reduce the work involved in common features. Custom development can make sense when the business process needs something more specific. Neither approach automatically produces a better website: clear content, accessible navigation and reliable implementation still need attention.

    WordPress for a content-led website

WordPress is an open-source publishing platform that can be extended with themes and plugins. It is worth considering when publishing and editing pages are central to the project and you want an established content-management approach.

Agree who will maintain the installation, theme and plugins. Ask which paid extensions are required, how backups will work and what editing training is included. Adding a plugin creates an ongoing dependency, so choose features deliberately rather than installing everything available.

Shopify when selling is the main task

Shopify is a commerce platform to consider when your priorities are a product catalogue, checkout and day-to-day store management. Start by checking your products, shipping arrangements, payment options and any apps the store will need.

The development fee is separate from the platform’s subscription and other applicable costs. Before committing, check current platform terms, payment fees and app subscriptions directly with Shopify. Also establish who will enter product descriptions, photography, variants and delivery information: store setup is more than choosing a theme.

    Custom development for specific requirements

Next.js is a React framework, while Angular provides a framework and tooling for building web applications. They are development tools rather than a ready-made promise of editing screens, hosting or business functionality. Those parts still need to be chosen and implemented.

In our portfolio, CraftDelhi uses Next.js for its handmade-gifts marketplace, while No Bound Travels uses Angular for its travel website. These examples show different types of work, not evidence that one framework is always faster or ranks better. The useful question is whether the approach supports your actual user journeys and future changes.

Ask these questions before making a decision

Can your team make routine updates without a developer? Does the platform support the integrations you need? What will hosting, extensions and support cost over the contract? Can you export your content or products? Who owns the accounts and the source code?

Share those answers with your developer and compare realistic options. TechRovo works with WordPress, Wix, Shopify and custom development, so we can discuss the trade-offs before agreeing a build. A small business website does not need a complicated architecture simply to look professional.
